The Results Are In: IBM i Data Centers In 2016 Looking at the state of…
Now that we’re over a quarter of the way into 2016, it’s time to ask ourselves: how is the IBM i marketplace holding up? Here we take a look at the IBM i ROI and customer satisfaction in 2016.
What Changed and What Hasn’t
According to the 2016 IBM i Marketplace Survey by HelpSystems, things are rapidly changing – and for the better. While only 66.6% of users had updated to OS level 7.1 or 7.2 in 2015, this number is now up to 81.7% in 2016. In the case of IBM i’s most current OS level, 7.2, usage has almost quadrupled from 3.8% to 14.5%. Similarly, reliance on older interfaces, such as green screen, has fallen (in the case of green screen specifically, from 39.5% to 33.5%). Mobile initiatives are also taking off, with a 10% increase among IBM i users alone (from 30% to 40%).
Despite all this change, some things have stayed the same, and perhaps these statistics are even more revealing. For instance, customer satisfaction with their IBM i has stayed constant, with 94% of businesses believing that IBM i provides a return on investment (ROI) that can’t be beat. That’s why it’s not surprising that so few users plan to migrate from IBM i to a new platform; in both 2015 and 2016, only about 4% of users stated they planned to migrate in the next two years.
The Diverse Users of IBM i
This year the IBM i Marketplace survey had a much larger international presence, with about 40% of users reporting from countries other than the U.S. or Canada, compared to 23% in 2015.
Most companies surveyed were within manufacturing or distribution, and had an annual IT budget of $50,000 or less for their IBM i. That being said, the industries using IBM i range from manufacturing to media, education, construction and more, while some industries are budgeting as much as $2 million a year. IBM i is a platform that has a stronghold in all types of industries, all over the world, and it will not be fading into the background anytime soon.
